I AM A WOMAN: Sovereign by Nature by Marta Lamovsek, Dubai 2020 - 2022
The artist invites us to her universe of art collection ‘I Am A Woman: Sovereign by Nature’ which is her first Solo Show in London and will be on view at ME London’s Marconi Lounge during a monthly art residency celebrating International Women’s Day from the 8th March until 17th April 2022
The art collection is made up of a series of striking portraits that depict the regal power of women and are distinctly shot in front of colorful textile backgrounds. Marta’s unique style of character-driven portraiture offers a spectacular riot of exuberance and maximalism, achieved through the use of bold fabrics, loud jewelry and quirky trinkets sourced in Dubai’s old-world bazaars. Marta’s extensive travels across the globe are uniquely displayed through her portraits, where she magically captures a diversity of cultures including those from the Emirates to London locals.
Marta comments on her process of portrait-making:
“During the intuitive creative process, I connect with my subjects on a deep level and I use the ornaments and embroidered fabrics to empower them. When I am making a portrait, something in me wants to meet their unseen Majestic Self.”
PLASTIC GARDEN by Marta Lamovsek Dubai 2016 - 2017
Marking the visual artist’s first Solo Show in Dubai, ‘Plastic Garden’ in Dubai Design District presents a take on the vibrant street culture of Satwa (district in Dubai) and pays tribute to the Pathani community of young Pakistanis living there.
Marta Lamovsek is unveiling a series of large format colourful photographic portraits within an installation. In this series that she was working over a year ago, she is in her studio photographing young Pakistani workers with flowers - traditionally perceived as adorned by the feminine. Artist who has never visited home country of her subjects, however learned that the men she was pulled towards to portray, most of the time live in the absence of their females: their mothers, wives, daughters and sisters lives far away from Satwa, in the southern Pakistan…
HOME IS A FEELING by Marta Lamovsek Dubai 2018
Marta’s second art collection created in Dubai was a commission by Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown in is part of their permanent art collection.
"Home is a Feeling is about Marta's childhood memories of being born and raised in Yugoslavia, a multicultural country that no longer exists, give a way for these multimedia artworks to become an ode to Marta’s connection to people from diverse nationalities who made Dubai their home.
The heroes of Marta’s series are everyday young people, mostly complete strangers, from diverse backgrounds that she relates to, and with whom she has in common the absence of a home their parents give them a sense of.
The Mix media photographs are uniquely framed with textiles - as a symbol of longing - textiles play a massive role in Marta’s memories of her childhood - her mother was a seamstress and Marta remembers there were always wrapped cuts of fabric in her childhood's home...
